Artist Statement

My work deliberately embraces the "wobbles" and the imperfections in my ceramics to represent identity. These irregularities serve as a form of acceptance, reflecting the human condition: just as no two people are identical, no two objects are the same.

Born in the Philippines and later moving to the UK, my transition between cultures opened my eyes to the diverse attributes, beliefs, and characters that shape who we are. I draw inspiration from social media, textiles, food, and everyday life. I use clay as a responsive medium to map this journey. Sharing my artistic approach in making functional ware to be used everyday.

It represents a relationship between memory, identity, and the tactile nature of clay. As a medium, clay is clearly responsive; it tracks our physical movements and preserves the brief touch or our hands, a memory that is manipulated through throwing and altered by hand, locking these fleeting moments into permanence once fired. My openness to different themes will allow me to discover unexpected joys of opening the kiln. While each piece's identity deepens the representation of an individual and bringing it more to life, infusing it with a distinct personality.

With exploring techniques I discovered what I call a "tapping technique" or flop technique, by creating a weak zone then tapping. This technique creates a natural slouch and forms a wobbly structure and a newspaper hack, which locks and stabilizes the rim before tapping, It also traps air in, preventing the structure from sagging unevenly. What I love about the tapping technique is that each piece is a not guaranteed to survive, it may easily flop and not work. So each piece is always a celebration of success.

While each piece is unique, the repetitive process of making these ceramics celebrates equality that serves as a daily reminder that despite our visible differences, we are all cast from the same fundamental material, created equal and fair.
